Learn about the vision, history, and the leadership driving Ghana's most transformative neurodevelopmental project forward.
The Ghana Armed Forces Special Needs Centre Project emerged from a growing recognition within the Military High Command that soldiers and their families — those who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation — often face silent battles at home. Among the most challenging is raising children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions without adequate institutional support.
Military postings and deployments frequently disrupt continuity of care, leaving families of children with special needs particularly vulnerable. The absence of structured, accessible, and specialized services within reach of military communities prompted the Military High Command to take bold and decisive action.
This initiative aligns with GAF's welfare goals and Ghana's inclusive education policy, signaling a new era in how the armed forces care for the full spectrum of its human capital — the soldiers, their spouses, and most importantly, their children. By extending services to civilian communities, the project reinforces the Ghana Armed Forces' deep commitment to national development and social inclusion.
"This novel initiative stands as a model of leadership and commitment to ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to learn, develop, and thrive."
The Ghana Armed Forces Special Needs Centre Project is a strategic initiative by the Military High Command aimed at establishing a dedicated educational and therapeutic facility for persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
The project is designed to address the growing need for structured, specialized, and accessible services for persons facing neurodevelopmental challenges, particularly within military families who often experience disruptions in care due to postings and deployments. The facility will extend its services to civilian communities, reinforcing the Ghana Armed Forces' commitment to national development and social inclusion.
The school aims to provide individualized education and early intervention services tailored to each person's developmental profile. It will integrate specialized intervention with multidisciplinary therapeutic support, including speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral interventions, psychological assessment, and counseling.
The facility will be purpose-built with neurodevelopmental and autism-friendly infrastructure — including a low-sensory-stimulation design, sensory integration spaces, therapeutic play areas, vocational and life-skill training units, and administrative and multidisciplinary staff offices — to promote functional independence and long-term developmental outcomes.
Beyond direct service delivery, the project will serve as a centre for caregiver empowerment, professional training, and capacity building — achieved through partnerships with government agencies, academic institutions, and development partners, both local and international. The school will help strengthen Ghana's national framework for inclusive education and disability support.
It is against this backdrop that we solicit the support of philanthropic organisations and individuals, to help make this dream a reality.
